Markus Kellerhaus, of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of B.C., will be the guest speaker at the Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment’s annual general meeting Jan. 14 at Myrtle Philip school. Kellerhaus will be speaking about the proposed Spruce Lake Wilderness Park and making a multi-media presentation on the Southern Chilcotins. When the provincial government declared the Stein Valley watershed a park in 1995 the rest of the Lillooet Forest District was subject to a Land Resource Management Plan to decide its future. The Spruce Lake area, which is included in the Lillooet Forest District, is currently being considered for logging. The Southern Chilcotin Mountains Wilderness Society and several other groups and individuals are fighting to have the area preserved. In addition to Kellerhaus’ presentation, the AWARE annual general meeting will include the election of new directors. The board of directors meets once a month. The board also examines proposals and initiatives by members and provides funding where appropriate. AWARE is seeking volunteers to carry out environmental projects as well as administrative duties and fund-raising work. Current AWARE committees include Habitat Protection, Waste Management, Public Education, Events, Membership and Forestry. The annual general meeting takes place at 7 p.m. Jan. 14, in the Millar Room of Myrtle Philip school.
