The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment’s grant in aid will be whittled down if the group doesn’t come up with matching funds. AWARE has traditionally received a grant in aid but the association doesn’t qualify for the recommended grant of $5,639 under a municipal guideline which says a minimum of 50 per cent of a group’s operating budget must come from sources other than the grant in aid. "There are lots of needy, worthwhile groups out there, most knock on doors and raise some money," said Councillor Max Kirkpatrick. "(AWARE) is relying on this council." On Tuesday council approved a grant in aid of $3,535 — the amount AWARE expects to raise from other sources. An additional grant in aid of $2,104 will be considered if AWARE raises the equivalent funds from other sources. AWARE received $5,539 last year. It had requested $6,200 this year. A total of $5,639 was recommended, to stay within the 1.8 per cent limit on grant in aid increases council imposed.
