AWARE meeting to focus on Rainshadow Wilderness

With the provincial government reviewing the Lillooet Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP) at the request of the resource industry and resource-based communities, environmental groups are working overtime to generate public support for the original plan.

Among other considerations, the first LRMP plan would have created a 71,000 hectare park around Spruce Lake and the South Chilcotin mountains.

The campaign to protect this area as parkland dates back to 1937, and the Association of Whistler Area Residents became involved three years into the six year LRMP process.

To generate local support for 14 parks created in the original LRMP plan, AWARE will be hosting a special presentation on March 7 instead of its regular monthly meeting. The presentation will feature slide shows and speakers from the Sierra Club of B.C., the Southern Chilcotin Mountain Wilderness Society, and the Bridge River Society.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the downstairs conference rooms at the Delta Whistler Resort.
