AWARE nets golf bonanza

On July 2, the Whistler Golf Club and Tourism Whistler presented a cheque for more than $6,900 to the Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment. Almost 200 Whistler-area golfers participated in the golf club’s annual Local’s Day on May 9, with the $35 green fees going towards AWARE. Every year a different Whistler charity is the recipient of the Local’s Day proceeds.

AWARE has announced that they will use the money to help fund ongoing Whistler wetlands projects.

"We didn’t anticipate this kind of funding, as hard as it is to find these days with all the different things going on in the valley, so it was really super cool to get this money," said AWARE director Wendy Horan, who received the cheque from Whistler Golf Club head professional Alan Kristmanson.

They money, along with the $4,500 donated by the Whistler-Blackcomb environmental fund, will be spent on restoring wetland areas that have been impacted in the valley due to recreation, construction and other pressures.

AWARE is currently working with the Whistler Fisheries Stewardship Group to identify candidate sites around town, and this fall both groups will enlist volunteers help replant areas with native species.

These native species will remove contaminant metals in the soil, and will filter water through biofiltration to restore wetlands, rivers and lakes in the area, which in turn will help to restore fish populations.

Some of the money will also be used for signage and the construction of a new wetland viewing platform on Lost Lake.
