One of Whistler's oldest and most dedicated environmental organizations is on the move. The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE) is temporarily taking over an office space in Function Junction, above the old museum. Although the relocation is just temporary, AWARE hopes it'll help them be more active and organized. The next AWARE board meeting is slated for Thursday, Dec. 3 in the basement of the Delta Whistler Resort. Members will discuss the nitty-gritty financial details of the organization and get things ready for the annual general meeting, to be held in January. AWARE Vice President Max Gotz says this is a great time for anybody interested in local environmental issues to get to know AWARE and to consider getting involved. Elections for the board of directors will be held in January and there's plenty of space for new members to get on board. Gotz says getting involved at a the board level is a great chance to direct policy. "It's at the board meetings that the direction of AWARE gets decided," he says. Over the past 10 years, AWARE has been involved in local environmental issues like waste reduction, recycling, transportation and endangered spaces. The organization works to protect the environment, to improve environmental awareness and promote sustainability. Gotz says AWARE's focus continues to be on preserving endangered habitat in the wetlands of the valley bottom. Monthly birdwalks along the valley bottom are held the first Saturday of every month. "I guess one of the unique things about us is that we're a volunteer group," Gotz says. "Anyone can get involved and really make an impact." The annual general meeting will take place sometime in January. For more information contact AWARE at 932-4457, or drop by the board meeting next Thursday at the Delta.
