Backcountry Advisory

As of Wednesday, June 2

Periods of flurries during the past week have deposited approximately 10-15 cm of snow in the high alpine. Although the new snow layers have settled out rapidly in most areas, they may remain reactive to the weight of a person on some isolated North-facing slopes. Prior to the snowfall much of the alpine terrain was overlain by a melt-freeze crust up to the 2,200 metre elevation.

The ridge of high pressure that has brought a return to mild sunny weather today is forecasted to persist until Friday. We may see a return to cooler, showery weather on the weekend.

Bear in mind that the layer of new snow on the surface will likely begin to sluff off as it moistens with exposure to the sun and rising temperatures. Once the typical spring melt-freeze cycle becomes re-established, avoid travelling across or under any steep mushy non-supportive slopes.

The backcountry avalanche danger is currently rated as LOW in the morning, increasing rapidly with exposure to the sun and rising temperatures.
