Backcountry Avalanche Advisory

Avalanche advisory as of Wednesday, Dec. 2

Alpine: Moderate Thursday, Low Friday

Treeline: Low through Friday

Below Treeline: Low through Friday

Travel Advisory: A well settled mid-season-like snow pack will continue to gain strength as a ridge of high pressure dominates the south coast. Isolated areas of wind slab may react to the weight of a skier at ridges and features.

Avalanche Activity: Isolated size one to two pockets of wind-loaded slab avalanche were reported on Tuesday. Solar aspects also reacted to the brief sunny periods yesterday producing minor results.

Snowpack: Areas of windslab can be found in lee/cross loaded terrain with scouring occurring on the more exposed aspects. The stiff windslab is sitting over lower density snow above a melt-freeze crust in the Alpine. The snowpack becomes moist as you drop below 1,950 metres.

Weather: A ridge of high pressure is establishing itself over the south coast with a weak disturbance forecasted for Thursday. Winds will be out of the North for the next few days. Temperatures are expected to drop on the weekend.
