Banned in Whistler! Affordable housing video pulled from Cable 6 A locally-produced video on what affordable housing means to Whistlerites was pulled from the TV airwaves of Cable 6 Community Programming. The video was screened once, Tuesday, March 3, before a call came to the TV station to take it off the air. The video made its premiere at the 19 Mile Creek affordable housing project information meeting at Myrtle Philip Community Centre, Feb. 28. Although people against the project balked at having it shown there, several of the anti-project supporters suggested, and voiced approval of, the video be shown on Cable 6. The video, produced by Kristen Robinson, quotes a wide range of residents and community notables on what affordable housing does for Whistler. It does not mention the 19 Mile Creek affordable housing project. Among those appearing in the video are former councillor and current Whistler Chamber of Commerce executive director Thelma Johnstone and Whistler Secondary School principal Rick Smith. Johnstone says good housing is needed to maintain employee well-being. Smith says students are losing excellent teachers because they can't afford to live here. Why the video was cancelled is not known. Cable 6 station manager and owner Ron Saperstein is on vacation and did not return calls for information to his office.
