Battle of the Badges The Whistler RCMP and fire department went shot for shot against an experienced Vancouver City Police team in the Battle of the Badges before a capacity crowd of 450 people at Meadow Park arena Monday night, eventually losing the game 8-6. "At one point we were down 5-1, but we came back and next thing we knew it was 6-5," says Constable Lee Hamilton, one of the event’s key organizers. Proceeds from ticket sales to the game raised more than $2,200 for the Whistler DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. Eddie "The Entertainer" Shack, a Hall of Famer who used to "Clear the Track" for the Leafs in the ’60s and ’70s refereed the event alongside former Habs star Yvon Cornoyer, who wasn’t noticeably weighed down by his nine Stanley Cup rings. "Yvon took a penalty shot for our team at one point, and blew past their goalie," Hamilton said. "It was great entertainment," said Const. Duncan Pound, who played in the game. "Everybody had fun, we raised money for DARE, and we didn’t get blown out or anything. I’d say it was a huge success." Constables Hamilton and Ed Gariety will be heading down to the city later this month to take on an NHL all star team at the PNE which includes such big names as Daryl Sittler and Lanny MacDonald. "In the last three years, we’ve raised more than $55,000 for the Sunshine Foundation," says Hamilton. Tickets are $16 each, and available from TicketMaster.
