B.C. Bike Race nearly sold out

Seven day epic from Victoria to Whistler

At press time the second annual B.C. Bike Race —a seven-day, seven-stage epic mountain bike event — was about 86 per cent sold out. A total of 480 spots were offered this year, and they’re going fast.

The race is for teams of two and four, and gets underway at Shawnigan Lake, outside of Victoria on June 28. Other stages get underway at Cowichan Lake, Port Alberni, Comox Valley, Sechelt, Squamish and Whistler, ending on July 4.

According to Grant Lamont, who is organizing the Whistler stage, the focus this year was on adding more singletrack for riders. To accomplish that, the organizers made a decision to remove the Squamish to Whistler leg of the race, which also required highway closures, and added a full day riding in Squamish instead. Dave and Sandra Heisler of Corsa Cycles will be organizing the Squamish stage.

After Squamish, riders will be brought to Whistler for the final stage, which Lamont says will be 50 to 75 km of singletrack. The exact course will be decided by race logistics, but he says the day will likely start in Creekside and end in Spruce Grove.

Overall, Lamont says riders can expect a lot more singletrack from start to finish.

“That was the big push this year, and the only way to do that is cutting out all the road we possibly can and getting creative in the way we use trails. A lot of it is going to be the same, like the route on the Sunshine Coast, but I know the main organizers want to keep to the mantra of making it the ultimate singletrack experience.”

The total distance of the race is unknown at this point, but last year’s inaugural race covered 525 km of ground, with about 40 per cent on singletrack. Registration is at www.bcbikerace.com.
