Adriane Carr, the leader of the B.C. Green Party, will speak at the AWARE (Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment) monthly meeting on March 1, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Delta Whistler Resort.

Carr co-founded the B.C. Green Party in 1983, and ran for the party in previous elections. She is best known for her success as one of the key negotiators of an agreement between environmental groups, First Nations and forestry giant MacMillan Bloedel that helped resolve 17 years of conflict in Clayoquot Sound.

She has been active in the environmental movement for 14 years, is married to Western Canada Wilderness Committee Paul George, and will run in the next provincial election in the Powell River-Sunshine Coast riding.

The discussion will include a question and answer period, and will be followed by AWARE's regular monthly meeting.

The Green Party will be actively campaigning in advance of a spring election, with representatives in all major ridings. The campaign will focus on the economic benefits of the green philosophy, focusing on the rising costs of health care and the diminishing returns of the fisheries, forestry and agriculture sectors.

"We are the only party committed to protecting the environment while being fiscally responsible," says Stephane Perron, a long time Whistler resident and green party co-ordinator.

"The only way to build a strong economy is to balance the budget and to reduce costs associated with environmental degradation."
