A prominent Sea to Sky historical destination has just landed $3.72 million in funding from mining industry leaders Ross Beaty and Lukas Lundin.

Beaty, who is a geologist and chairman of Pan American Silver, has made a personal donation of $2 million, while Lundin, a business leader in the resource industry, has made a personal donation of $1 million. The remaining $722,000 comes from a corporate donation made by Red Back Mining Inc., where Lundin serves as Chairman of the Board.

The funds will be put towards the museum's three-phase redevelopment project, which aims to preserve its heritage buildings and mining collections while enhancing the visitor experience and transforming the site into an internationally recognized destination. Specifically, the $3.72 million will go towards the new Beaty-Lundin Visitor Centre, which will house several theatrical mining and mineral exhibits, a theatre space, a gift shop and the Canadian Mining Museum Hall of Fame.

"It's important for our industry to support the B.C. Museum of Mining because of their important role in preserving mining's history and educating the public about how mining has changed the way we live," Beaty said in a recent press release.

Take a trip to the ArtBarn

There are plenty of barns in Pemberton, but while most are home to farming equipment and barnyard animals there's one that offers a much more cultural experience to visitors.

This coming weekend, on Saturday, May 29 the ArtBarn in downtown Pemberton (next door to Home Hardware) will play host to a special art show featuring the work of Wim Tewinkel of the Mute Raven Studio. The themed show, "Genuine Art as a Present," will feature a collection of paintings, photographs and feather collages, all signed by the artist, which will be for sale - most for less than $100.

Tewinkel, a long time Pemberton area resident, has been involved in the local art scene for many years, over which time he has held several solo art shows in Whistler and participated in Whistler Arts Council's annual ArtWalk and ArtRageous programs. For the past two years, his paintings have been selected for "Painting on the Edge," an international juried art show put on by the Federation of Canadian Artists in Vancouver.

He is also the author and photographer for two books: "Salish Elders" featuring local First Nations elders, and "Forest Life," a book about woodlot licensees in British Columbia. Many of Tewinkel's pieces can be viewed online at www.wimtewinkel.com.

His upcoming ArtBarn show runs from noon until 6 p.m., and entry is free.

The 2010 Summer of Funny

Think you've got what it takes to make people hoot and howl with laughter? Pick up that pen and paper and show Whistler what you've got by entering the second annual Summer of Funny humour-writing contest, sponsored by Pique Newsmagazine.

The inaugural competition in '09 yielded so many quality submissions that Pique staffers couldn't seem to agree on a clear winner. So it was decided to divide the $400 prize purse among the eight entries that stood out from the more than two-dozen pieces received. And since none of the writers complained, Pique has decided to give the contest another whirl this year. The rules are the same - all written submissions will be accepted, from anywhere in Canada, and can be in the form of stories (up to 2,000 words), poems, plays/scripts, or long-format jokes. We'd even accept cartoons.

The prize money will be the same, as will the review by Pique writers and staff. If there is a clear winner this year they may receive a larger share of the purse at our discretion, otherwise we may decide to simply run a wide selection of pieces this year and divvy up the prize money equally. Humour is subjective after all, and we'd like to give our readers a chance to decide.

Send all entries to andrew@piquenewsmagazine.com before August 23 (date changed) for inclusion in our Labour Day long weekend issue (published September 2). Please include a brief bio and mailing address with your submission.
