B.C. riders rule Cyclo-Cross championships

Victoria’s Geoff Kabush became the first B.C. rider to win a national Cyclo-Cross title, unseating seven-time national champion Peter Wedge in a showdown on Wedge’s home turf last weekend in Dieppe, New Brunswick.

Kabush crossed the line in 56 minutes, 0.3 seconds, seven seconds ahead of Wedge. Greg Reain of Ottawa was third by a gap of almost four minutes.

Wendy Simms of Nanaimo successfully defended her title in the women’s race, crossing the line in 41:18.9. Samantha Nicholson of Calgary was second by almost a minute, followed by Tara Ross.

Cyclo-Cross is a cross between road riding and mountain bike racing, with riders completing a set number of laps of a course that includes road, dirt, and other mixed features. Most riders use modified road bikes, preferring speed to comfort.
