B.C. skiers on podium of Mars J1 Championships 

Rough course conditions force nine to back out

The Mars J1 Championships for skiers aged 15-16 took place at Georgian Peaks this past weekend with a pair of giant slalom races.

The Ontario skiers made the most of the home advantage on Saturday, with Jesse Shepard of the Ontario Ski Team and Ottawa’s Dustin Cook, who trains with the Mont Ste. Marie club in Quebec, sharing the gold medal with identical times. Third place went to Mathieu Routhier of Quebec.

The course conditions were tough, with nine of the first 13 racers not finishing and high winds and rain on the course.

The Whistler Mountain Ski Club’s Morgan Pridy was 10 th and Benjamin MacLean was 21 st out of the 55 racers that made it to the finish.

In the women’s race Kesley Serwa and Elli Terwiel of the B.C. Ski Team finished second and third behind Andrea Bliss of Alberta.

The WMSC’s Jennifer Mah was 19 th , Victoria Whitney was 20 th , Brittany McGovern 45 th , Deborah Bayliss 52 nd , Katrina Dekur 56 th and Calindy Ramsden 58 th out of 73 finishers.

On the second day Jesse Shepherd won his second gold, while Dustin Cook took silver. Routhier earned the bronze once again.

For Whistler, Benjamin Podborksi cracked the top-10 with a seventh place finish. Morgan Pridy was 15 th and Michael Kearney 30 th out of 89 finishers.

For the women, Catherine Blanchard of Quebec took the gold, ahead of B.C. racers Kelsey Serwa of Big White and Georgia Simmerling of Grouse Mountain.

Jennifer Mah moved up to 13 th , Deborah Bayliss was 48 th and Katrina Dekur 58 th .

Whistler K2 skiers named to Team B.C.

Seven Whistler skiers will be heading to the CIBC Wood Gundy K2 Nationals at Mont Tremblant March 20-24, where they will face the top 13 and 14 year olds from across the country.

The WMSC skiers include Brynne Benbow, Madison McLeish, Nancy Bayly and Chanelle Segal for the women, and Ian Morrison, Alexander Binks and Isaac Penn for the boys.

They will be competing in super G, GS and slalom events.
