Bear activity calls for vigilance

Two cinnamon-coloured yearling bears have continued to generate complaints in the past week. A bear trap was set in Whistler Cay earlier this week, where one of the two bears has been reported.

The other yearling was trapped and relocated to the Soo Valley, just a week earlier by conservation officers. The bear, which is now wearing an ear tag, has been reported in the Creekside area this week.

Sylvia Dolson of the Whistler Bear Society reports that these two yearlings, and their mother, became a problem as a result of people’s carelessness with attractants and submissive behaviour around bears.

"It would be very helpful if residents not only managed their garbage and other non-natural foods so that they don’t attract bears, but as well, residents should not allow bears to feel comfortable on their properties," Dolson said. "Bears accessing non-natural foods in human territory should be ‘shood’ away immediately."
