The Whistler RCMP received a call at 10:30 a.m. on June 24 from hikers on the Rainbow Trail to say that they had been followed by a black bear for approximately 10 minutes. They were about an hour's hike in from the Rainbow Trail parking lot.
The people made it down safely, and the B.C. Conservation Officer Service investigated the area. They were unable to find the bear but are continuing to search.
That was only one of three bear calls this week including bear-human encounters on the valley trail, in the other cases the bear left on its own.
warned for passing school buses
Two commercial drivers were issued warnings by the Whistler RCMP for passing a parked school bus with its stop signs extended and lights flashing. Both cases were reported on Panorama Ridge and Hawthorne Place, with the bus driver taking note of the vehicle make and plate number before contacting the RCMP. Failing to stop for a school bus is punishable with a ticket for $145.
Dog recovered from stolen vehicle
A dog belonging to a man from Bellingham, WA., was recovered in Kelowna on Tuesday after being missing for almost two days.
The dog was in a 2002 silver Dodge pick-up truck that was stolen from where it was parked on Mamquam Road in Squamish on Sunday. The vehicle contained the Washington's man's wallet, a U.S. passport, a cell phone and two mountain bikes.
The dog, a chocolate lab named Wyatt was found in Kelowna and returned to his owner on Tuesday morning.
The police are still searching for the truck and other missing items.
