Whistler award winning subject A profile of Whistler by Vancouver-based writer Michel Beaudry has been recognised by the Canadian Tourism Commission. Beaudry’s story, entitled Whistler - A World Unto Itself, ran in Ski Magazine’s October 1998 issue. Beaudry received the CTC’s Northern Lights Award for excellence on travel reporting in Canada. He received the award in New York last week. "It’s always great to win awards," said Beaudry. "But to win one for writing a story on such a Canadian legend in the making as Whistler is even more exciting. From its very inception, the story of tourism in Canada has revolved around winter sports, snow and mountain locales. Looking at it from that perspective, Whistler is but another chapter in that story." The judges comments for Beaudry’s piece were: "With a polished, lively and enthusiastic style, the author convincingly conveys the unique appeal of B.C.’s Whistler/Blackcomb ski resort both for the young and hip, and more recently, for the rich and famous world-wide. He addresses a large reading audience by delivering a detailed history, a business success story and a knowledgeable description of the joys of skiing at Whistler. Using colourful quotes and anecdotes to illustrate, he makes the reader want to visit what sounds like a magical part of the world. The story is balanced and frank, citing the resort’s drawbacks as well as its special attractions."
