Blackcomb Foundation raises $60,000 for local charities Five local charities will benefit from the $60,000 raised by the Blackcomb Foundation at the BC Tel Mobility Winter Classic, Feb. 17-18. The beneficiaries of the third annual event include: Whistler Community Services, which will use the money to enhance its new facilities in Whistler Creek and upgrade the food bank, toy lending library and facility computer. A planned parenthood program is also in the works. Whistler Big Brothers and Big Sisters, who will contract case workers for the screening of potential "Bigs." Squamish Fire Rescue will purchase two pieces of life-saving equipment, an extraction device and a defibrillator. The Whistler Public Library, which will purchase new computers, upgrade existing equipment and establish a link to the Internet. The Peter Xhignesse Memorial Fund, which is administered by the Blackcomb Foundation, will increase the size of its fund. That fund provides grants to Pemberton High School graduates to continue their education. The money was generated through corporate team entries as well as silent and live auctions. Several hundred people participated in a fun ski race, an evening wine reception and an evening dinner/dance at the Rendezvous Restaurant on top of the mountain.
