Between Shifts a multiple winner at North Shore Festival

Fletcher, Price, Wong honoured for Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds

Squamish-based Between Shifts Theatre Company’s latest production, The Effect of Gamma Rays On Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds, was a multiple award winner at Theatre B.C.’s North Shore Zone festival which took place May 3-8 at the Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver.

The ensemble’s work with the emotionally taxing Pulitzer Prize-winning period drama by Paul Zindel earned recognition in several fields.

Grade 12 student Megan Fletcher proved she is definitely a rising star, winning both the Best Performance by an Actor-Female award and the Florence Goodwin Theatre Award for the Most Promising Newcomer, the latter of which includes a $200 bursary toward further education in theatre.

Fletcher portrayed the character of Tillie Hunsdorfer, a demanding role that required interaction with an emotionally unstable mother, a caustic older sister, an elderly invalid and a live rabbit.

In addition to Fletcher’s awards Judi Price was honoured for Best Achievement by a Director and Lynn Wong was honoured for Best Achievement in Costumes.

"I think we blew their socks off," said Kathy Daniels, who was also nominated for the Best Performance by an Actor-Female award for her portrayal of embittered mother Beatrice Hunsdorfer.

"It took us over an hour to get to our dressing room because there were people five-deep all around us, congratulating us, telling us how this is the best thing Between Shifts Theatre had ever done.

"We had quite the night. It was our best performance ever."

Between Shifts honed the production at pre-festival runs in Squamish and Whistler in April.

The North Vancouver Community Players’ entry Dancing At Lughnasa won the Zone Festival Award for Best Overall Production and advances to Mainstage, Theatre B.C.’s annual Provincial Community Theatre Festival taking place in July in the Okanagan.
