Bike Park season wraps up Monday with scavenger hunt

It's been almost five months since the Whistler Mountain Bike Park opened for the season, but all good things must come to an end. The lifts stop turning at the end of the day Monday, Oct. 11. But in the meantime the park is putting together one last event to celebrate the season.

It's billed as the "Chasse au Tressor," which is the French equivalent of a scavenger hunt. Teams of two or four will head out with a map of the park and find clues together, which they will need to solve the final puzzle.

The goal, says event director Seb Fremont, was to create a fun event that everyone can do.

"There's no racing in this, just riding with your friends," he said. "The goal is just to enjoy the bike park."

None of the clues, he added, require double black riding to find, although riders can take whatever route they want to get there. That said, even the slowest riders have a chance to win this event.

After the ride and the awards there will be a turkey dinner at the GLC for participants, followed by a mountain bike movie premiere.

Early registration is available at Guest Relations. Event day registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the GLC patio, followed by a riders meeting at 11 a.m. The start is at 11:15 a.m. When teams complete their clues they can drop them off at the GLC. The awards get underway at 5:30 p.m. The top team is eligible to win a 2011 Bike Park pass and there will be a draw for a second pass that's open to all participants.

The turkey dinner is at 7 p.m. and the movie premiere at 9 p.m.

The cost is $10 per person to do the event only, not including passes - lift tickets are available for $15 for participants. For $35 a person can take part in the event, the turkey dinner and the movie premiere. For just the dinner and movie premier the cost is $30.

All of the details are conditional upon getting a high enough turnout. If not enough riders sign up then the dinner will be cancelled and riders will be refunded that part of the cost.
