An upgrade to the Whistler Village Bike Park beside Lot 3 was completed last week, with Alpine Bike Parks installing several new features as well as reshaping the area to create rhythm and dirt jump sections.

The upgrade was made possible by over $83,000 in funding, including $40,000 from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, $24,860 from the American Friends of Whistler, $15,366 from Alpine Bike Parks and $2,500 from the BC Bike Race.

"Our direction this year in working with the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and American Friends of Whistler was to create a safe, progressive, learning skills environment for kids aged four to 12 years old," said Grant Lamont of Alpine Bike Parks.

The new setup is missing a teeter-totter, but one will be engineered over the winter to ensure it's both safe for kids and durable, and won't require as much upkeep as the previous feature.

Lamont said the park is suitable for bikes with 20-inch wheels, as well as run-bikes.

As for the remainder of the bike skills park a little further along, Lamont said this first upgrade was a test, and they hope to be able to work on more phases as funding comes available.
