Bikers heed call for record Phat Wednesday

More than 120 downhillers in the field

Whether it was the prizes, the course choice, its growing reputation as a fun and well-organized event, or the weather, the Phat Wednesday Downhill Series came into its own on June 28 when the event attracted a field of over 120 athletes – a new record for the three-year old series.

The course was fast, fun and only moderately technical, incorporating Angry Pirate, a section of World Cup Singletrack and Ho Chi Min.

But while the field of athletes was huge, the race was not as close as might be expected, with large margins between first and second and sometimes third in most categories.

The next Phat Wednesday event is on July 12, the third of six races until the series starts up again in August following the Crankworx mountain bike festival. The July 12 course is still to be determined.

The draw prize list will once again include a SRAM X9 drive train, WTP saddles and tires, Fox clothing, Kokanee gear, and Nintendo products.

To take part you have to be a member of the Whistler Off Road Cycling Association (memberships are available at the start or online at www.worca.com ) and chip in $2 towards the pot. That includes some food and beverages after the race.
