Re: “Record number of men take part in Whistler Walk a Mile event

While I don't think that walking a mile in red pumps will ever equate to the struggle against male violence that women endure everyday, I do commend the mens efforts and enthusiasm. Women don't need to wear heels to be objectified, assaulted, or dehumanized. I am so happy to see men rallying beside a feminist organization to end violence against women - but awareness is only the first step.

I can only imagine (especially after looking at the picture above) what the men were thinking and how they were acting while wearing those shoes. The gender stereotyping is obvious. Gimmicks for publicity sake do have a place, but it is very disconcerting that this is what needs to be done to get men to rally beside us. What might be more appropriate to walk a mile in our shoes is to be forced into prostitution for a day, stay at home with the kids while being abused by your partner, or even walking alone down a dark alley at night wearing a sign that says "Come rape me, I'm asking for it".

The best thing that men can do is be accountable. Not just for a day, but every moment of their lives. Don't let other men get away with sexist comments. Have conversations with peers about ending violence against women. Help fight sexism in your workplace. I hope that one day walking a mile in her shoes will be the same as walking a mile in his. We are not how we dress. We are women. We are human.
