Birdies flying at Junior Tour tee-off

If you’re a serious golfer who has spent decades perfecting your swing enough to score in the 80s, you might want to stop reading – it gets a little depressing.

There was a solid turnout for the Sea to Sky Junior Tour’s first event of the season at the Chateau Whistler on July 4, with 27 junior boys and girls taking part. Most of the competitors come from the Lower Mainland and Sea to Sky area, but one competitor was here from Calgary.

Closest to the pin went to 15 year old Nick Stewart on the 10 th hole, and the longest drive – an incredible 302 metres – went to 16 year old Squamish golfer Scott Sellers. Brooke Browning, just 13, won the ladies’ longest drive competition.

The 13 year old low gross went to Jason McLean of Pemberton who shot an 89.

The 14 year old low gross went to Jorden Coren of West Vancouver, who shot an impressive 80. Coren was aided in this feat with an eagle on the long ninth hole, a par on the 10th, and birdies on the 11th and 12th. Michael Daugulis of West Vancouver won the 15 year old low gross with an 86.

The women’s low gross went to Stephanie Sellers of Squamish, who shot a 94.

Scott Sellers and Whistler’s Shawn Crichton tied with 81 each, and Fraser McGlennanof of West Vancouver shot an 82.

"The scores were low considering the gusting winds that were in place through the afternoon," said tour organizer Pat Miller. "We hope to have a full 40-player tournament next week (July 10) at the Whistler Golf Club."

There are a total of seven stops on the Junior Tour. The cost is $40 to enter, or $30 for club members. The fee includes green fees, a snack at the ninth, prizes and a post-round dinner at the host club.
