W-B Foundation chips in $38,000

Although no one walked away with the hole in one prizes of a Harley Davidson or Cadillac Escalade, the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation came out on top at its Mixed Golf Classic. The annual event raised $38,000 for charities in the Sea to Sky community.

Team Trev Dealey had the best round of the day while Whistler’s John Rae won the putting contest. The big 50/50 winner of $1,060 was Craig Blythe and Dan Jarvis is now sporting a new $1,500 Longine watch.

The Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation sends out a big thank you to all area businesses and guests for their continuing support. Foundation President, Dave Brownlie, tips his hat to the cake and rousing chorus of Happy Birthday at the sold out reception at Dusty’s.

The golf tournament is one of two major events the foundation holds during the year to raise funds for charities in the Sea to Sky area. The Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation Winter Classic is held on Blackcomb in January.

The Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit charities for future grants. Programs considered for funding must be in the areas of health, human services, education, recreation, the arts, culture and the environment, with emphasis on youth and family programs. The submission deadline for the next round of grants is Oct. 1.

Recycleman takes on plastic bags

Carney’s Recycleman has dealt another blow against the evil forces of the Just Dump It Gang. The recycling and waste disposal firm is now accepting clean plastic film, plastic grocery bags, dry-cleaning film and pallet wrap in its recycling system. Bag your bags and place them in the Plastic Containers and Bags bin at your local depot.

Even though the packaging industry has reduced its average packaging by 51 per cent, plastic still accounts for approximately 20 per cent of our municipal solid waste stream.

Origin goes international

Whistler-based Origin Design and Communications is expanding internationally through a new consulting contract with Intrawest’s American retail operations.

Origin has been working with Intrawest for two years. The new contract will send Origin’s project manager, Mary Jo Legault, to Intrawest’s retail offices in Denver to act as the interim Director of Marketing, where she will oversee the execution of print, radio and television campaigns for the company’s 60+ Max Snowboard and Breeze Ski Rental shops.

While in Denver, Legault will also explore opportunities with other Colorado resorts, a step towards Origin’s goals of expanding its resort client base.
