Blackcomb Freestyle Club nets 14 medals

The Blackcomb Freestyle Club had a strong opening weekend in the first of three provincial contests at Apex Mountain Resort Jan. 14-16.

Eighteen team members competed in moguls, dual moguls, and big air events, winning 14 medals over three days of competition.

The moguls took place on Friday in —25 degrees Celsius, with coaches and competitors contending with frostbite, icy bumps, and hard landings.

The BFC’s Keltie Hicks won gold in the youth ladies moguls.

Simon Louwe, Jae-Woo Choi and Woo-Hyun Cho were fifth, sixth and 18 th in the youth men’s event.

Dana Jensen was second in the juvenile ladies, and Devon Krainer finished just off the podium in fifth.

Zack Glanzberg won gold in the tough juvenile men’s contest, landing a backflip iron cross and a lincoln loop on the way down. Tom McKay was fifth, Will Fedorko ninth, Matt Holley 11 th , Clay Renwick 16 th and Branden Roise 18 th .

Eddie Hicks took a bronze in the junior men’s category, with Cam Doye and Arden Schiller finishing ninth and 10 th respectively.

Saboto Hirano won gold in the senior women’s moguls, while Taisuke Tatenaka and Takanor Shibabuki were third and fifth in the senior men’s race.

In the Big Air on Saturday, another cold day, Zack Glanzberg won his second gold medal in the juvenile men’s competition. Tom McKay and Will Fedorko were seventh and 13 th respectively. Eddie Hicks, Arden Schiller and Cam Doyle were fourth, sixth and seventh among the juniors while Taisuke Tatenaka won gold for the senior men.

Keltie Hicks won a bronze in the youth ladies event, while Devon Krainer was second among the juvenile ladies.

The competition wrapped up on Sunday with the dual moguls. Keltie Hicks won silver.

Devon Krainer won silver once again, while Dana Jensen won her last heat to finish third.

Zack Glanzberg, Will Fedorko and Clay Renwick were fifth, sixth and ninth, Eddie Hicks won bronze, and Taisuke Tatenaka gold in their respective categories.

The next competition takes place Feb. 11-13 at Silver Star. The team will be short Simon Louwe and Keltie Hicks who will be taking part in the Sports Illustrated Kids Next Snow Search in Keystone, Colorado.
