A Coquitlam man was found dead in the Pemberton area on Thursday, July 3, 10 days after he went for a solo hike in the backcountry.
The cause of his death is still being determined, and the RCM P is not releasing his name at this time.
The 48-year-old man left for his hike on Tuesday, June 24, through the Stein Valley, east of Pemberton. The man had chartered a helicopter and was dropped off in the valley.
According to Sergeant Blake McLeod, RCMP believe the man planned to hike out of the Stein Valley and return to his vehicle within approximately four or five days. He was also believed to have been properly equipped for the excursion, including provisions.
When the man failed to pick up his parked car eight days later, on July 1, the RCMP immediately launched a search of the area. The search included resources from Pemberton, Whistler, Squamish, Logan Lake, Coquitlam, Kent-Harrison, Kamloops, Comox, Campbell River, Lions Bay, Chilliwack, RCMP Air Services and RCMP Police Dog Service.
The man’s body was found in the late afternoon on Thursday, July 3. The BC Coroners Service is still investigating his cause of death.
