The body of Peter Thompson, 19, of Canmore, Alberta, has been found. Thompson went missing on Sept. 28 when he kayaked over a small waterfall on the Cheakamus River.

Attempts to find him immediately after his disappearance failed and searchers declared Thompson missing and presumed drowned.

On Saturday afternoon, the Whistler RCMP learned that Thompson’s body had been located. S/Sgt. Steve LeClair reported that the discovery was made by some of Thompson’s friends.

“On October 13, several of the missing male's friends attended the area and observed the stern of the missing male's kayak sticking out of the water,” LeClair wrote in a news release issued Monday morning (Oct. 15).

“They were able to dislodge the kayak, which still contained the body of the male. The body was secured downstream and removed from the area with the assistance of Whistler Search and Rescue."

A celebration of Thompson’s life was held near Calgary on Saturday, Oct. 6.
