Bold bike thieves steal with owners nearby

On July 23 at 6:50 p.m. the RCMP received a call regarding a black and yellow Norco Charger bike taken from Rainbow Park. It was unlocked and the owner was nearby.

The police recovered a bike matching its description outside the Whistler Conference Centre three days later, where it had been left unlocked for several days. It was returned it to the owner.

On July 26, the RCMP was also alerted to an attempted bike theft from a hotel locker on Gateway Drive. The thief attempted to cut a lock holding several bikes together, but was unsuccessful.

On July 27 at 1 p.m. the RCMP received a report of a bike theft from a bike rental shop in the village. A person had rented a bike using a prepaid credit card and did not return it.

On the July 29, the RCMP received a report regarding a stolen 2011 Specialized Demo 8 that was taken from the village just after 8 a.m. The male had put the bike in a rack and was standing and talking to friends about seven metres away when someone walked up and stole it. The bike has a value of roughly $7,000 with green Race Face cranks, a blue Race Face handlebar and new Fox 40 shocks.

Several bikes were recovered by the RCMP this week as well. A blue Rocky Mountain was recovered at Sunridge and Panorama on July 24. A black dirt jumper was found in an underground parking garage on Main Street on July 26.

The police are asking owners to come by the RCMP detachment if they've lost bikes matching these descriptions.

As well as stolen and recovered bikes, the RCMP is searching for a lost bike as well. On July 25 they received a report that a blue 2009 Turner downhill mountain bike had fallen out of the back of a truck between the Alta Vista subdivision and Whistler Village. If you found a bike matching that description, please return it to the RCMP so they can give it to its rightful owner.

Police seeking owner of damaged bike

On July 27 at 3 a.m., a police foot patrol in the village was flagged down by concerned members of the public after they observed three males jumping on a bike that was chained to a rack on the village stroll, damaging the rear tire. The RCMP attended and the three males were issued bylaw tickets for causing a nuisance. The police would also like to hear from the bike's owner, as they plan to charge the three males to repair the damage as well. If you're the owner of the bike, call 604-932-3044.

RCMP Investigating trailhead thefts

A recent letter to Whistler Council from the victim of a vehicle break-in at a popular trailhead has made its way to the RCMP, which is coordinating a response to the issue.

Sergeant Rob Knapton of the Whistler RCMP couldn't get into specifics, but said they were looking at different strategies for combatting the problem. "I can't give you any details on what the solutions are, but there is some work being done in these areas," he said.

In recent weeks and months, vehicles have been targeted at trailheads throughout the corridor, from Murrin Lake in Squamish to Nairn Falls in Pemberton. Most recently the police answered calls regarding vehicle break-ins at the Cheakamus Lake trailhead. The break-ins involved two vehicles and happened overnight on July 26, and reported to police the following day. Windows were broken to gain access and some items were stolen.

Businesses broken into, cash stolen

At 3:15 a.m. on July 29, the RCMP received a report regarding a cash register that was stolen from a business on the 4300 block of Northlands Boulevard, containing an unspecified amount of cash. The store clerk left the room and the register was gone when they returned.

The RCMP say there is video related to the theft.

At 8 a.m. on July 29, the RCMP received a call from the 2000 block of Alpine Way regarding in a break-in to a business. A safe containing some cash was stolen after the thief forced his way through the door. The RCMP also has video from that incident.

As well, at about 8:15 a.m. that morning the RCMP received a call regarding a break-in to a business on Mons Road, and the theft of some cash from the premises.

The RCMP can't say yet if any of the incidents are related.
