April 20-27 is Book and Magazine Week in B.C., but every day is book and magazine day at school libraries.
To answer that every-day need at Whistler Secondary and the future Spring Creek elementary school, parents are organizing a used book sale. Proceeds from the sale will go to stocking the shelves at the two schools.
"Myrtle Philip school has a wonderful library but it’s taken years to get there," said Jane Reid, one of the organizers of the book sale. "It takes time to build a school library and funding for library books is one of the easiest things to cut back funding on."
Donations of used books, magazines – even comics – are now being accepted at Nesters Market, the TD Canada Trust branch in Marketplace, and at Whistler Secondary and Myrtle Philip schools. Look for the bins in the lobby or exit area of each location.
The sale will take place May 18 and 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in front of the IGA.
Any books donated that are deemed suitable for either school’s library will be set aside for the schools. A used book sale last fall yielded about 600 books that were in good enough shape and appropriate for the Spring Creek school library. More than 200 books found their way into the Whistler Secondary library.
Reid said organizers are hoping to get donations of used books from seasonal workers who are leaving the valley now that winter is over.
