On July 29, construction finally began on a 100-metre long steel bridge spanning a deep section of the Cheakamus River canyon.

Whistler Bunge Incorporated is building the bridge to accommodate a bungee jumping platform, but it will be open to the public at all times once it is completed. At its highest point, the two-metre wide arched bridge is more than 50 metres above the Cheakamus River.

The bridge will link to areas within the Soo Provincial Forest and Brandywine Park. Trails are being planned for the area in the next few years, including a route to the nearby Jane Lakes.

According to Chris Rollett, one of the co-owners of Whistler Bungee, everything is on schedule to open to the public on Aug. 17. Whistler Bungee will provide hourly shuttles from Whistler Village to the jump site, about three kilometres down the main road from the Cal-Cheak Forest Service Recreation Site, which is 15 km south of the village. You can also drive there on your own.

The cost of the shuttle is $5 for a return trip. The cost to participate is $90 for the first jump and $40 for all subsequent jumps. You can choose between ankle harnesses and waist and chess harnesses, and can ask to be dipped in the river.
