Brotherhood Summit to convene in Whistler

One of the biggest ski conventions will be descending on Whistler during the first week of February.

The National Brotherhood of Skiers will be hosting their signature event, the fundraising Summit 2003, in Whistler. This event will bring in almost double the NBS members as in the past.

The Summit is expected to bring about 2,500 Brotherhood skiers to the resort from Feb. 1 to 8. There will be parties, concerts and competitions, as well as the annual meeting.

The summit’s main goal is to support the NBS Olympic Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support for exceptional athletes of colour who excel in winter sports. The ultimate goal is to get these young athletes into Olympic competition.

Nationally, the NBS Olympic Scholarship Fund provides financial resources to qualified youth who meet the educational and training requirements of future Olympians. A maximum of 16 youth are enrolled per year at various ski academies.

"We are delighted to welcome the NBS back to Whistler for its huge Summit event," said Roz Casey, director of destination awareness at Tourism Whistler.

"The NBS has enjoyed our destination and facilities for its regional meetings, so we were pleased to work together with the organization to bring its largest and most significant meeting to Whistler."

Usually the winter carnival, which has been held in Whistler three out of the last four years, is a time for the 23 western region clubs in the United States to come together and ski. It is held in honour of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Between 500-1,200 members come for carnival.

The Summit on the other hand is the largest, continuously running ski convention in North America. It has been running every second year for the past 30 years.
