Whistlerites will get their first look at the upcoming municipal budget at an open house on Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Maury Young Arts Centre.

Budget information will be posted online a week earlier on Feb. 15.

The open house will consist of a gallery walk featuring displays and discussions, followed by presentations and remarks from 5 to 5:45 p.m., and ending with more time to peruse the displays.

"The 2018 budget community meeting is a great chance to learn about factors affecting the municipality's Corporate Plan and current budget, key projects and initiatives, and ongoing operations funded by your tax dollars," said Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden in a release.

"I'd like to remind everyone that planning by the municipality takes place year-round and is informed by long-range plans. We receive feedback throughout the year through program surveys, data monitoring, recommendations from committees of council, and other open houses and community forums."

Proposed project and operating budgets will be refined using input received at the open house, with budget guidelines to be officially presented to council in March.

The bylaws are tentatively scheduled for first three readings at the April 10 council meeting, with adoption set for April 24.

Readings of this year's tax-rate bylaws are also tentatively set for April 24.

OLYMPIC FESTIVITIES PLANNED FOR WHISTLER

With the 2018 Olympic Winter Games set to kick off in PyeongChang, South Korea on Feb. 9, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is hoping to bring the sprit of the Games back to Whistler.

The RMOW will show daily CBC broadcasts from the Games on a big screen at Whistler Olympic Plaza from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. including replays and Team Canada highlights.

There are also a slew of events planned for Family Day on Monday, Feb. 12, including special offers like 50-per-cent off cross-country ski or snowshoe day tickets at Lost Lake, 50-per-cent off all drop-in visits to the Meadow Park Sports Centre skating rink, pool and fitness facilities (not including drop-in hockey), and 50-per-cent off children's skate rentals (when accompanied by an adult) at the Whistler Olympic Plaza Skating Rink.

Family Après will also feature Olympics-themed activities during the Games every Monday and Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Attendees to Family Après on Monday, Feb. 12 and Monday, Feb. 19 also have a chance to win passes to the Whistler Sliding Centre.

The special festivities are being planned to celebrate the eight-year anniversary of Whistler's role as Host Mountain Resort of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

"The anniversary is a great opportunity for the community to come out and reignite the incredible energy and excitement of the 2010 Winter Games," Wilhelm-Morden said in a release.

"I encourage everyone to celebrate the PyeongChang Games, cheer on local athletes at the Olympic Plaza broadcasts and join the range of Olympic-inspired activities around town. And of course it will be a great time to reminisce about your favourite 2010 memories."
