bursary

Grade 8s gain bursary for theatrical endeavours Two Whistler Secondary Grade 8 students were awarded bursaries by the Whistler Community Arts Council during the Whistler Children's festival last weekend. Jennifer Pringel and Teresa Bates will both be using their bursary money to attend theatre camps this summer. Pringel will attend the Shakespeare Bard on the Beach Festival camp in Vancouver in June. Bates will be attending the Missoula Children's Theatre Camp, located in Montana, in August. This theatre camp may be familiar to locals as they have been brought to Whistler by the arts council every fall for the last eight years. Joan Richoz of the arts council says the bursaries go a long way towards helping young people further their artistic interests. "The courses can get very expensive, especially the Missoula one because it is located in Montana and you have the strength of the American dollar. The council award is 75 per cent of the cost of the course. But whenever they are up here they always invite the most promising students to come and join them for their summer program. I think it is a really great course, really intense. We've already sent people on that one (in previous years)." There are more awards coming up this summer through the arts council. This month they will be announcing the recipients of their art award cash prizes. "These are different in that there are no strings attached," says Richoz. "Although we would prefer they spend the money related to their artistic intentions." The awards go to one student at each of the Whistler and Pemberton elementary and high schools, making a total of four awards. The high school students receive up to $500 while the elementary students will receive $100. "It's trying to recognize those kids who perhaps don't really qualify in the school awards. Something like piano lessons which take place outside of school. They tend to recognize visual art so this gives those other kids a chance."
