Businesses line up to welcome newcomers and locals

The Whistler Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting a forum for local businesses to tell locals and newcomers alike what they are all about.

"Businesses were asking for it," said Mecki Facundo of the chamber.

It used to be that new residents learned about who did what in town as part of the Spirit program. But the trade show component was cancelled a couple of years ago. Facundo said it was decided this year to re-introduce it as part of the activities for Welcome Week.

The local business forum will be held at the Telus Conference Centre at Whistler from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20. There are already 60 businesses and non-profits signed up to tell visitors about themselves said Facundo. All the information tables will be in the upper and lower lobby of the conference centre.

It’s not too late for businesses to sign up. Just call Facundo at 604-932-5922 ext. 20. If you are providing food or refreshments the cost is $25. The full price is $50 plus another $100 if you want an Internet connection.

Approximately 1,500 people are expected to attend the forum and all will have a chance to take part in a quiz and win prizes donated by participating businesses as well as cash prizes.

Facundo said the information is valuable not just for the newcomers themselves but also because it gives them a knowledge base they can draw upon when visitors ask them for help.

"As much as you learn for yourself you can give to others too," said Facundo.
