Despite the rainy weather, last weekend’s Cancer for Awareness and Prevention (CAAP) walk was a success, going beyond its original goal of $20,000.

Sixty-eight participants and over 20 volunteers came out to the event, which raised more than $20,600.

“We were blown away by the number of participants on the morning of the event as it rained the entire day,” said event organizer Shalene Warren.

“The commitment of all the volunteers was impressive and some were very wet before the day was over,” she said.

The day included 25 km and 5 km walks along the Valley Trail, followed by a reception at Dusty’s. Funds were raised through individual participants, raffles, a 50/50 draw, and a silent auction.

Participants of all ages attended the walk, including six year-old Tristan Sanders — who completed the 25 km walk and raised $350 — and 88 year-old Catherine Fick from Erin, Ontario.

Top fundraisers were Devon Brusse, Susan Peavoy, Carin Smolinski, and Shannon Bryne Susko.

All proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society, B.C./Yukon division.

Local women Shannon Byrne Susko, Tammy Peavoy, and Scalene organized the event after a brainstorming session earlier this year around how to make people in Whistler more aware of cancer and the need to be proactive about their own health.

The weekend’s success has encouraged the women to continue hosting the walk.

“With the positive feedback received and the local support we are committed to making the event even bigger next year,” said Peavoy.

Next year’s walk is scheduled to take place on June 14.
