CTV to profile young athletes
CTV Sports is looking for young Whistler athletes to profile for a regular feature called Perry’s High Five, hosted by Perry Solkowski.
The opportunity is open to young athletes, coaches and volunteers. To apply, write a brief bio of the athlete, with information on the sport, the position they play, their league and team names, accomplishments, and send it to highfive@ctv.ca. The profiles will be screened at 6:40 p.m. on weekday evenings.
Lottery funds free snowboard coaching courses
The Canadian Snowboard Coaching Program is hosting a series of five basic coaching courses, each lasting three days and limited to seven participants.
The courses are at Mt. Washington (Dec. 19-21), Whistler-Blackcomb (Jan. 2-4), Powder King (Jan. 8-10), Big White (Jan. 12-14), and Cypress Mountain (Jan. 21-23). The Whistler camp is open to female coaches only.
The SportsFunder lottery is subsidizing 75 per cent of registration costs, cutting the original cost of $295 down to just $73.75.

Bobsleigh, skeleton athletes wrap up Whistler testing
Canada’s bobsleigh and skeleton athletes wrapped up more than three weeks of training and testing at Whistler Olympic Park on Sunday, en route to the FIBT America’s Cup event in Calgary Nov. 3-9.
On the course this past weekend were Canada’s women’s teams, and the four man bobsleigh teams. The results were kept by Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton, and will be combined with results from Calgary to select the team for the World Cup season.
Based on last year’s World Cup performance, Canada will field two four-man sleds, and two two-man sleds on the World Cup circuit, as well as three two-woman teams.
The Whistler team selection event did not shake things up too much, although Lyndon Rush’s four-man team upset Pierre Lueders to captain the Canada 1 team. Lueders will drive Canada 2. Helen Upperton will steer the Canada 1 team, Kaillie Humphries will drive Canada 2, and Lisa Szabon will drive Canada 3.
Next up at the Whistler Sliding Centre is Luge International Training Week, Nov. 8-15, which will feature athletes from Canada and around the world. Luge Canada will announce its official team on Nov. 10, using results from a previous test event at Calgary Olympic Park.
This season the Whistler track will host two World Cup events. The FIBT Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cup is Feb. 2-8, and the FIL Luge World Cup event Feb. 16-22.
