Whistler’s Forest and Wildland Advisory Committee has concerns about the impact of clear cutting — which is expected to be included in Western Forest Products’ five year plan for the Callaghan Valley — on the 2010 Olympic bid. The committee has discussed potential conflicts between Western Forest Products’ plans and plans to stage the nordic events in the Callaghan Valley if the Vancouver-Whistler bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics is successful. Western Forest Products is expected to release its five year plan for the valley some time this month. An area in the Upper Callaghan is proposed as the site for all nordic events if the Olympic bid is successful. People involved in the Olympic bid feel that in addition to being an excellent site for the nordic events, the Callaghan can be a positive example to the world of B.C.’s forestry practices. Much of the valley was logged years ago and then replanted. By 2010 some of the replanted forest will have matured. The municipality’s experimental fertilizing program, using bio-solids processed at the wastewater treatment plant, has also been conducted on some of the second growth forest in the Callaghan Valley.
