The Beatnuts, representing Queens, NY

Who: The Beatnuts

Where: Garfinkel’s

When: Monday July 28

To reign at the top of your game, its not enough to have just lyrical expertise tucked in your backpack of skills. You have to be able to man the boards, direct musical content and deliver verses that will appeal to the underground while whetting the appetites of the mainstream. For more than twelve years, the Beatnuts have fulfilled these necessary requirements displaying their ability to relentlessly issue the illest instrumentals, paired with blistering hot lyrics.

The Corona, Queens duo Physco Les and Junkyard Juju linked up back at the rise of hip-hop in the early 80's, initially on a mission to create beats, and have brought latin hip-hop to a whole new page over the years. They have worked with industry leaders the Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, Naughty By Nature, De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan, Da Lench Mob, Fat Joe, Big Pun, and Prome Minister Pete Nice, to name a few. They earned their first solo record contract in 1993 with the mini-LP, Intoxicated Demons .

This debut release was held up when the third member of the group, Kool Fashion, was arrested and jailed for six months on a drug conviction, but still the Beatnuts released a self-titled album the following year. After a hiatus verging on three years, Fashion became a Muslim and left the Beatnuts. Ju-Ju and Les returned to release Stone Crazy in 1997. This album featured the smash hit single with Big Pun "Off the Books" which is now the subject of a major sample infringement lawsuit with Jennifer Lopez for her use of the track in her No. 1 song "I'm Real"

Their latest album, Take It or Squeeze It, issued in spring 2001, captured the Beatnuts danceable funk as well as collaborations with Method Man, Fat Joe, and Ghostface Killah of The Wu-Tang Clan.

Do not miss the hip hop event of the summer with Bless, Mat the Alien and DJR3. If you remember when Rahzel and Mix Master Mike were here, tickets sold insanely fast so don’t be a statistic second time around. See Garf’s or Daisy Internet now. Tickets are $20.
