Honing the artistic eye

Art may be a matter of individual taste, but there are also some key elements to look for in any artistic piece.

To help assist artists and art lovers alike with the critiquing process, the Squamish Valley Artists Visuals group will be holding an art critique night on Thursday, Jan. 8 from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. at the Squamish Public Library meeting room.

The evening will include helpful art tips and teach people to critique artwork within a positive and supportive environment. People are asked to bring one piece of artwork for anonymous feedback, and non-artists are also welcome to attend, as the workshop can help with future art purchases.

Visual members can attend for free, while non-members must pay $15 at the door. For more information, visit www.squamishart.com .

Facelift for Transitions

The temporary Transitions Art Gallery, which has called the former Dollar Store location home since late August, has gotten a bit of a makeover.

In mid-December, the impromptu artist-run gallery received a fresh coat of paint to complement all of the new artwork that was recently hung. Now, the space features the work of over 15 local artists.

Check out the homegrown talent every Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. in the Market Pavilion on Main Street.

Fourth annual Rock for a Cause wraps up

Kostaman was just one of many local artists who participated in the Bands Against Hunger Society’s annual Rock for a Cause benefit, which was held on Dec. 21 and 22 at Buffalo Bill’s. This year, the event raised $3,000, which will be divided between the Whistler Food Bank, the TOV Orphan Centre in Namibia, and Playground Builders. Organizers attribute their success to the efforts of volunteers, bands and DJs, sponsors and local media who helped to make the two-day event possible.
