On Saturday, June 19, Whistler will be threatened by a growing forest fire coming in from the north.
The fire is part of a mock wildfire exercise running from 9 a.m. to noon that day.
The scenario involves the forest fire encroaching on the community at the height of the summer visitor season.
Hotels are busy, the Riverside Campground is full and bikers and hikers are roaming all around the area.
As the events heat up, the municipality’s emergency operations centre is activated and thrown into high gear.
Evacuees are needed to be a part of the training exercise. Emergency Social Services will open a reception centre for the evacuees at the Spring Creek Community School from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed to play along.
By participating, evacuees could win a three-month pass to the Meadow Park Sport Centre.
Residents and guests can also participate in the wildfire exercise by checking out the firefighting practices, watching an air tanker drop on the side of Blackcomb Mountain and visiting the information booths in the day skier parking lot 3.
