With the final event of the season cancelled last weekend due to the wildfires in the Interior, the Canadian Cycling Association released its final standings for the 2003 season. A number of Whistler riders took part in at least a few of the races this year.

The big surprise this season was Ontario’s Jesse Jakomait who participated in all of the cross country events this year, and won the elite title with 640 points – only to not be named to Team Canada for the upcoming World Championships.

The majority of the racers hailed from eastern Canada, where there were three out of five races in easy driving distance. With the cancellation of the Sun Peaks event last week, the only western events were in Calgary and Fernie.

Kris Sneddon was the top B.C. racer, and the second Espoir (Under 23) in the rankings.

The top Whistler rider was Will Routley, who finished 25 th overall with 217 points over three races.

The Elite women’s title went to Sandra Walter of B.C. with 635 points. Second went to Marie-Helene Premont of Quebec, who earned 600 points with three wins in three races.

The top junior was Ontario’s Max Plaxton with 400 points. Emily Batty of Ontario was the top junior woman, also with 400 points – four wins in four races.

In the downhill, Mathieu Laurin of Quebec led the way with 530 points. Whistler was represented by Dave Burch, Chris Dewar and Jeff Beatty.

Danika Schroeter of Vancouver was the top Elite woman with 600 points, winning every race she entered.

Whistler’s Claire Buchar was 11 th with 155 points.

Sean Brown of Quebec was the top junior with 245 points.
