Canadian athletes in surprise parade through Whistler Village

Olympic opening ceremonies tonight at 6 p.m.

Whistler will be treated to a surprise parade during the opening ceremonies celebrations being held in the village today.

Thursday, during a media briefing, Whistler Live! organizers announced that in addition to their original opening day entertainment plans, which include an extensive morning broadcast, a performance by local band The Hairfarmers, at 2 p.m. and the broadcast of the opening ceremonies from B.C. Place at 6 p.m., they will also be welcoming 65 Canadian athletes as they parade through the village sometime between 6:40 p.m. and 7:10 p.m.

The parade is a last-minute addition to the Whistler celebration, thanks to arrangements made through the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC). The athletes will be led up onto the Village Square Stage by the RCMP and join the Whistler Children's Chorus in the singing of O'Canada.

Other events in the village today include the RCMP Musical Ride at CTV Mountain Square at 11 a.m. and artist Stan Matwychuk working on a community mural in Town Plaza starting at noon.
