Crankworx wrapped up on Sunday with a World Cup-style downhill competition, mostly taking place on the World Cup Downhill course used in the national championships last year with the addition of a tricky new section that bumped up the difficulty level. Close to 200 riders took part.
Fabien Barel of France finished the course in 2:54.1, the fastest time of the day. World Cup champion Sam Hill placed second in 2:55.6, while Greg Minaar placed third in 3:01.2.
The fastest Canadian was Nanaimo’s Steve Smith, who placed fourth overall in 3:02.4. The top Whistler racer was Jeff Beatty, placing 11 th overall in 3:07.8. Beatty has already qualified to represent Canada at the upcoming World Championships in Scotland, and came into Crankworx with the goal of playing it safe.
Tracy Moseley added yet another win to her resume, completing the course in 3:30.1 to win the Pro Women’s category.
Hot on her heels was Whistler’s Claire Buchar, coming in at 3:31.0. Jennifer Ashton of Whistler was third in 3:48.9, followed by Katrina Strand in 3:51.1, and Micayla Gatto in 3:51.9.
In Junior Men 16 to 18, Kyle Salisbury of Washington placed first in 3:12.5, followed by Edward Masters of New Zealand and Matt Zdriluk of Ontario. Ryan Vanderham of North Vancouver was the top Canadian in fourth, with a time of 3:18.8.
The top Whistler rider was Ian Morrison in 10 th place, with a time of 3:25.0.
In Boys 13 to 15, Tyler Allison made it a clean sweep of the podium with another Crankworx win. He finished the course in 3:13.3, followed by Chayse Marshall of Kamloops and Wills Gower of Australia. Other local riders in the top-10 were Nick Geddes in fifth and Craig Campbell in ninth.
Whistler’s Neil White placed first in the Amateur Men 19 to 29 category in 3:20.1, followed by Luke Nelson of Fernie, and Kelly McGarry of New Zealand. James McSkimming placed fourth, less than half a second off the podium. Other Whistler riders in the top-10 include Will Dixon in fifth and Tristan Merrick in eighth.
In Master Men 30-Plus, Adam Wright of Whistler placed first in 3:13.6, followed by Americans Andrew Mulcahy, and John Pitton. Also from Whistler, Craig Bullen was sixth and Michael Steward ninth.
In Amateur Women 19 and Over, Danice Uyesugi of North Vancouver placed first in 4:18.0, followed by Dawn Cashen of Kelowna and Kari Mancer of Whistler. Kara Fitzgerald of Idaho raced alone in the Junior Women’s category.
