Canadians take podiums at U.S. Nationals

Kucera, Forsyth share podium with top American skiers

With Daron Rahlves and Bode Miller landing several World Cup podiums this year and strong racers like Julia Mancuso, Sarah Schleper and Lindsey Kildow securely in the top-10, the U.S. Ski Team. is poised to become one of the most dominant alpine teams in the world.

Still, if the results from the U.S. National Championships at Mammoth Mountain are any indication, the Canadians are not far behind.

In the opening super G on April 3, Calgary’s John Kucera split the difference between Rahlves and overall World Cup champion and super G champion Bode Miller, taking the silver medal. Rahlves finished the course in 1:16.63, almost a second ahead of Kucera’s 1:17.51. Miller was five one-hundredths of a second back of Kucera.

Gareth Sine and Brad Spence also cracked the top-15 for Canada, finishing 10 th and 13 th respectively.

In the women’s super G Byrna McCarty and Mancuso took the top two spots in 1:22.44 and 1:22.65. Nanaimo’s Allison Forsyth broke up the U.S. podium sweep and nearly finished with a silver medal with her time of 1:22.66.

Sherry Lawrence also cracked the top-15 in 11 th place.

In the giant slalom on Monday, Forsyth was strong once again, finishing second to Julia Mancuso. Macuso finished with a time of 2:53.46 after two long runs, more than a second ahead of the rest of the field. Forsyth was second with a 2:54.70, while Kristina Koznick of the U.S. was third in 2:54.90.

Shona Rubens of Calgary was sixth.

The Americans took the top two spots in the men’s giant slalom, with Ted Ligety and James Cochran first and second with times of 1:37.54 and 1:39.26 respectively. Brad Spence, another Alberta racer, finished third in 1:40.21.

Michael Tichy also cracked the top-15 for Canada, finishing ninth.
