The eight annual ESPN X Games are arguably the biggest on-snow event outside of the Olympic Winter Games, and for many winter sports enthusiasts they’re much, much bigger. With events like slopestyle, skier and snowboard cross and motocross best trick competition, the X Game are definitely more progressive.

Dozens of Canadians, including several Whistler athletes, qualified in the different events and some of them landed on the podium.

In the women’s slopestyle, only two Canadians qualified for the event, and both made it through the preliminary round into the finals. Quebec City’s Pricilla Levac just missed the podium, finishing fourth overall. Whistler’s Natasza Zurek was eighth.

The top three spots went to American riders, with Janna Meyen finishing first, Tara Dakides second and Jessica Dalpiaz third.

In the men’s slopestyle, Whistler’s own Travis Williams finished in fifth place overall, and was the only Canadian to make the finals. Etienne Gilbert and Guillaume Morisset didn’t make the cut.

The top three men were Shaun White and Danny Kass of the U.S., followed by Andreas Wiig of Norway.

Skier cross favourite Aleisha Cline of Squamish just missed out on her third straight gold medal, finishing a close second to Karin Huttary of Austria. Sanna Tidstrand of Sweden was third in the six-skier final.

Two other Canadians were in the consolation round. Anik Demers of Lac Beauport, Quebec won the consolation final, and Whistler’s Ashleigh McIvor was fourth.

None of the Canadian men qualified in skier cross.

In the women’s superpipe, Whistler’s Mercedes Nicoll finished in seventh place and was the only Canadian in the finals after Zurek missed qualifying. The top three spots went to Hannah Teter and Kelly Clark of the U.S., followed by Doriane Vidal of France.

The men’s superpipe finals were all-American with the exception of Kazuhiro Kokubo of Japan. The top three spots went to Steve Fisher, Danny Kass and Keir Dillon.

In the skier slopestyle finals, Whistler’s Mark Abma and Charles Gagnier of Victoriaville, Quebec were seventh and eighth overall. Iannick Brouillette and Rex Thomas didn’t qualify for the finals.

Tanner Hall of the U.S. won the event for the second year in a row, followed by American Peter Olenick. Jon Olsson of Sweden was third.

In the Snocross snowmobile event, a pair of Canadians landed in the top three. Michael Island of Burlington, Ontario took the win, edging out Tucker Hibbert of the U.S. and three-time consecutive champion Blair Morgan of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
