There were just too many good stories and photographs that deserved a better fate than a recycling bin or in a magazine stack at the doctor’s office.
Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine editor Mitchell Scott decided to create an evening celebrating mountain culture by showcasing stories and photos captured over the past four years in Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine.
And The Backyard Booty was born, an evening of home-brewed multi-media, coming to Whistler for the first time on Friday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. at MY Millennium Place.
“There is so much that didn’t make it into the pages of the magazine,” Scott said. “The event is a great way to celebrate Kootenay talent and its most recent storytellers and photographers.”
But even if you know nothing about the Kootenays, Whistler audiences will be able to identify with its common mountain grounds and the lifestyle that springs from that.
Scott will host the evening and anyone who had the privilege of hearing his hilarious rant on raising his kid in the mountains at the Words and Stories presentation at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival last year, knows this spoken-word artist has the gift of the gab.
“It’s an interactive, fast-paced night of mountain culture with a decidedly Kootenay bend,” Scott said. “I think Whistlerites are really going to dig it.”
Along with entertaining and heartfelt yarns, the evening of mountain culture also includes short films from Bill Health, Leif Zapf-Gilje and Freeride Entertainment. Slideshows will be presented by Derek Frankowski, Hollywood star shooter Bryce Duffy, Patrice Halley, Dave Health, Bryan Ralph and Kootenay magazine publisher and photo editor Peter Moynes.
“Bryan Ralph is an upcoming photographer and really putting everything into his show,” Scott said. “The crowd completely freaked out over it (at the Nelson showing). He gets to take that confidence and take it out into the world.”
Audiences will be invited to join in the fun with a storytelling competition hosted during the evening. Before intermission, Scott will present a theme to the public. Four people will be chosen to share a story based on the theme with the crowd voting for their favourite tale. Competitors will have a chance to win gear from Arc’teryx.
Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 8 p.m.
