The 2016 Canadian census process is underway, with the official census day set for May 10.

But to make it happen, Statistics Canada needs the help of some dedicated Whistlerites.

"We're actively recruiting for both a crew leader for Whistler and enumerators for Whistler, and we're having some difficulties right now to be honest," said Lorne Anderson, director of Statistics Canada's western region and northern territories.

The census is looking to hire one crew leader and 13 enumerators in Whistler.

The crew leader will start March 7 and work until August 12, while the enumerators will start April 28 and work until July 15.

The crew leader position pays $19.91/hour, while enumerators are paid $16.31/hour plus expenses such as mileage.

"They have to commit to working 20 hours a week or more, and a fair amount of the work would be evenings or weekends, because obviously you want to catch people when they're most likely to be home," Anderson said.

Being bilingual in Canada's two official languages of French and English is an asset, particularly for the crew leader position.

Duties for enumerators involve dropping off census questionnaires, conducting in-person and over-the-phone interviews to obtain completed questionnaires and collecting census information from people living in collective residences.

The crew leader will be responsible for training and leading the team, supervising its performance and overall quality control.

"It's actually really awesome work for people who maybe have other jobs and (want) a little extra work on the side," Anderson said.

"You're basically your own boss. You report to the crew leader, but as long as you put in your 20 or 21 hours a week, we're happy. If you're getting results and getting the completed forms, that's what we're all about."

This year marks the return of the mandatory long-form census — the fulfillment of a campaign promise made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"It's absolutely crucial for every single community in Canada to participate. It provides a wealth of data that's used by governments at all levels, by businesses, by developers, by you name it," Anderson said.

"If you've got good, solid, quality reliable data, you can make more informed decisions."

Applicants must be 18 years or older and a Canadian citizen or eligible to work in Canada.
