Central Reservations still on hold

Tourism Whistler’s plan to relocate central reservations to Vancouver has been put on hold for now.

Tourism Whistler’s plan to relocate central reservations to Vancouver has been put on hold for now.

The current focus, said Diane Mombourquette, director of business operations, is to get the people in the current reservation system up to date with Whistler’s new marketing strategies in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the U.S. Sept. 11.

"Right now we can’t afford to divide our attention," said Mombourquette.

If central reservations is moved it is unlikely it will happen before the end of the winter season.

The delay won’t cost Tourism Whistler any money and won’t inconvenience the staff, said Mombourquette, as everyone had been told not to make any lifestyle changes until the plan was definitely adopted.

The proposed move was announced in September but by October Tourism Whistler said it was awaiting the report of a consultant before committing to the plan.

Mombourquette said the move was being considered for various reasons including easier access to trained staff, and access to better technology at a lower cost.

But many in the community were unhappy with the plan, saying phone operators would not be familiar enough or enthusiastic enough with the resort to sell it over other destinations.
