A former executive director of Smart Growth B.C. and Better Environmentally Sound Transportation is on her way to Whistler in December to serve as the first executive director of the Whistler Centre for Sustainability.

Cheeying Ho was confirmed as the executive director this week, and will join the centre on Dec. 15 to coincide with the operational launch of the organization.

Ho will help develop the centre’s strategic plan, with a goal of one day making the centre self-sufficient by acting as a consultant for local governments, businesses, event organizers, and others by leveraging Whistler’s experiences with the Whistler 2020 framework, and sharing research on sustainability issues. The centre will also organize conferences, seminars and speakers, bringing groups to Whistler to demonstrate sustainable concepts in action. The Resort Municipality of Whistler’s long term goal is to be completely sustainable by 2060.

The first board of directors was confirmed in July, with a mandate of hiring an executive director and developing a strategic plan.
